Systems Of Equations

Lesson on Elimination

  1. To eliminate the coefficient, you have to add or subtract the equations together.
  2. The numbers you eliminate have to be opposite integers.
  3. Once your coefficients are opposite integers you add or subtract the rest of the equation.
  4. Then you isolate one of the variables (an isolated variable), plug it into one of the equations and solve for the eliminated coefficient.
  5.                                                                             Example

                                                                                 5x-6y=-32
                                                                                  3x+6y=48
                                                                       (now you eliminate 6y and -6y)
                                                                                  8x=16
                                                                                  ÷8    ÷8
                                                                      x=2
