EXAMPLES 

 1. y=3+5    y=13+9               You have your two equations you need to subsitute

     3+5=13+9                        Plug in the 3+5 in to the second equation

      8=13+9                          Add the 1st equation together

       8=22                            Then add the second equation                               SUBSTITUTION

       8=3+5  22=13+9            Does the equation make sense? YES

2.  x=2x+5    x=-2x+6          You have the two equations for elimination

           x=2x+5                  The put the equations on top of each other to solve it

        + x=-2x+6                   Since "2x" and "-2x" are opposite you can eliminate those two            ELIMINATION

             x=11                   After eliminating add the coefficient. Then you get 11

3. Suppose you are using 2 different types of fertilizer on sunflower Plants 1 and 2. And they are both growing under the same environment. Plant 1 is 10in. tall and Plant 2 is 13in. tall. Plant 1 grows at a rate of 1 inch a day and Plant 2 grows at a rate of 2 inches a day. Which systems of equations models the height of each plant S(d) as a function of days d? Choose the correct answer

A. H(d) = 10d + 1                             B. H(d) = 1d + 10

    H(d) =  13d + 2                                H(d) = 10d + 13

                                                                               C. H(d) = 10d + 1                           D.  H(d) = 1d + 10

                                                                                   H(d) = 2d + 13                                H(d) = 2d + 13

                       RELATE       plant height      is         initial height            plus          daily growth

                       WRITE        Plant 1: H(d)     =                    10                   +                    1d

                                         Plant 2: H(d)     =                    13                   +                     2d

 

                                        The system is H(d) = 1d + 10

                                                             H(d) = 2d + 13
